LTS Increases E-mail Quotas
As of mid-September 2008 e-mail quotas
for students will be significantly increased by Library and
Technology Services. In recent years, the volume and size
of e-mail communication (e.g., attachments, digital images)
has increased substantially.
As
a result, some Lehigh faculty, staff, and students have
experienced the frustration of being unable to access e-mail
because they have exceeded their storage quota.
Student e-mail account storage has been
raised to 1 gigabyte. It is anticipated that the move to a 1
gigabyte quota will prevent most of these frustrations.
However, this increase is not a
substitute for good e-mail file management and students are
still expected to delete old and unused e-mails, and move
large e-mail file attachments to their hard drives or
alternate storage locations. Students with questions should
call the Help Desk (8-4357).
In late May 2008, e-mail quotas were
increased to 2 gigabytes for faculty, exempt staff, and
non-exempt staff. With the newly expanded space, faculty
and staff are encouraged to store their e-mail on the mail
server, rather than in Local Folders.
Mail stored on the server is available
from anywhere in the world, backed up nightly, and protected
in the unfortunate event of a system crash. Once again
users are still encouraged to practice good e-mail file
management. It is advisable to automatically or manually
“empty trash” after 30 days.
This is a good way to avoid wasting
disk space. Faculty and staff with questions should either
contact their LTS computing consultant or call the Help Desk
(8-4357).
